I’m learning that the whole notion of perfection when creating is antiquated and draining. This goes especially when working as a contractor for clients.
Those who are experts or are well on on their way there, this idea of perfection can be very prominent.
On one hand this concept sets those of us who identify as service providers with a model or certain code of conduct. As a result we try to be the best in providing the client experience, in terms of customer service, using our set skill set to ease the client’s mind of unease, thus bringing in results to help them improve their business. This is some form or facet enables them to fulfill their bottom line.
I have been learning as a freelancer, that in as much as the code of conduct is important to ensure that one adheres to the proper principles when engaging with clients and prospects, the model of perfection is unattainable.
It is a good measure, one should aim to adhere to but it isn’t realistic. Aiming to carry out perfection breeds for much unnecessary, procrastination, overplanning, over intellectualizing, and plainly just doing too much.
At the end of the day as long I’m learning as the service provider have a proven track record of doing the work you’ll be hired and referred. The degrees on the wall don’t matter. The client just wants the problem complicating their business solved.
Stressing over perfection whether it be on a proposal or a deliverable is great in theory. In reality I learned that trying to FORCE ONESELF TO BE PERFECT causes way too much unnecessary anxiety and fear.
At the end of the day, we as people are service providers and humans too. Attempting to provide perfection is a waste but putting in the routine consistent effort to show up makes all the difference. Even if there might be some fear or discomfort that rises at times when prospecting or working on a deliverable, I’ve learned to acknowledge it. Thank it for reminding me I’m human and should continue creating content.
Writing amidst the fear and discomfort or working however as needed is crucial as a service provider. Doing so ensures that
quality work is created to keep clients satisfied by relieving their stress
One continues to practice the craft
As a service provider it becomes more apparent one can only make a difference for clients when you show up consistently whether it be by creating content or engaging in some sort with prospects and current clients.
